Duna-Tisza köze
The region between the Duna (Danube) and Tisza Rivers is one of the most unique areas in Hungary. It is not by chance that the rest of the world ofte recognises Hungary by the famous Bugac Puszta. The ever changing landscape of the sand and salt plains, the lakes, dunes and sand forests with their orchards, which stretch in a southerly direction from the Pest Plains up to the Serbian border, as well as the different lakes and swamps of the flood plains of the Duna and the Tisza make it a fascinating region.
Farming is varied, ranging from animal husbandry on the open plains to fruit, wine and vegetables. In the areas with good soil, cereals and corn are cultivated. There is little woodland, mostly acacia and pine which are planted to bind the sandy soil and some mixed woodlands on the flood plains. In the hunting area - with the exception of any wooded parts - roe deer and small game can be found. The quality of the trophies of the roebuck is good but not as good as in Szolnok and Békés. There are many medal bucks shot here. Antlers often weigh 400-450 g, but buck with antlers weighing 500 g or more are occasionally shot. Hunting is usually done from a vehicle due to the wide open spaces.
The pheasant are augmented with reared birds. Wild hare are to be found all over this enormous area in various concentrations. This species is usually hunted in the areas with fertile soil where there are large cultivated fields. Waterfowl can be shot near the wetlands.
The large blocks of woodland in the south-eastern part of the region and the flood plains of the Danube offer red deer and wild boars an apt habitat. As these areas lie close to the famous Gemenc hunting area, where the red deer stags are world famous, hunters can expect to shoot good trophies, in some cases even excellent. On the Serbian border it is possible to shoot fallow buck under natural conditions.
